Why I chose the darkness.
By Robert Mahase

I’ll be honest with you: I’m tired of the lies the photography industry tells women.
Every day, I see ads telling you that you are a “Queen” or that you just need to “love yourself” before you book a shoot. It’s fluff. It’s fake. And I know you don’t believe it, because you tell me so during our consults.
You tell me you hate your reflection. You tell me you’ve gained weight, or that your body has been through hell, or that you feel like a stranger in your own skin.
I didn’t specialize in Shadow-Play because it looks “cool.” I specialized in it because I realized that for most women, a bright, white studio feels like an interrogation room. You feel exposed. You feel judged.
I chose the shadows because they are a sanctuary.
When I turn the lights down in my Titusville studio, I’m not just being “artistic.” I’m giving you a place to hide the parts of yourself you aren’t ready to love yet. I use the darkness to protect your privacy and your insecurities, so that the light only has one job: to find the fire that he, or the world, or the mirror tried to dim.
I don’t do this for the “pretty” pictures. I do this for the moment at the Same-Day Reveal when you look at the screen and stop being sad. I do it for the “real proof.”
You don’t need to be “ready” to call me. You just need to be tired of hiding.
Private sessions are currently booking for September and October in Titusville. Every commission begins with a confidential conversation about your story, boundaries, and vision.
Let’s find your fire in the dark.
